“Living a Lie”

1 John 1:6 KJV

[6] If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth:

The believer’s words and walk should always be in sync with each other. A double standard has caused the world to lose respect for modern day Christendom. Sinners have no confidence in church goers who sin and party on Saturday night, then want to sing and pray on Sunday morning. They see these individuals for who they really are. They are hypocrites trying to ease their own conscience with a little religion. So, the world develops the slogan for them, “Practice what you preach”.

Even the world knows that fellowship with God brings you out of darkness. They understand that light and darkness do not dwell together. The man or woman who thinks they can live in sin and have fellowship with God is fooling no one, but themselves. Sin separates man from God.

I remind you that John is talking to saints not sinners. He is also talking about fellowship not relationship. While our relationship with God is secure our fellowship can be hindered and even severed if we choose to walk in darkness. Darkness is anything that is displeasing to God.

We should also note the word walk speaks of a continual action. Walking is more than a step. Walking shows the direction and will of the individual. No one accidentally walks. This involves the person’s mind and will. So, when believers walk in darkness after being in the light of God and his Word, it is by their own will and logic. They may say they are in fellowship with God, but in reality, they are living a lie. Walking in darkness will break fellowship with our Father, and it will cause us to live a lie and detour us from the truth.
