1 John 1:8 KJV
[8] If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
Today’s world is filled with deceit. It all started in the Garden of Eden with the devil and Eve. A simple conversation casting doubt on the truth of God’s word caused a catastrophic reaction. Since that day, deception has infiltrated our society like a cancer out of control. Truth has fallen in the streets! The world would rather believe a lie as to know the truth about sin.
Self-deception defiles our speech. Keep in mind that John is talking to believers. It is shocking that anyone could reach a point that they believe they have no sin. What is more shocking is that they would be vocal about it. This proves that the heart always affects the tongue. Self-deception causes an individual to lie. It causes them to say things that are not true and that are contrary to the word of God.
Self-deception displays our sinfulness. Man can become deceitful because man is sinful. Self- deception reveals how corrupt the heart of man really is. We have the capability of deceiving ourselves all by ourselves. We can easily convince our flesh that what we are doing is ok, when in reality it is not.
Self-deception denies the scriptures. Have you ever heard someone take a passage out of context to try to justify their sin? Perhaps you have heard them say things like, “Well, that’s your interpretation of the Bible”. Or, “I used to believe it that way, but now I see it differently”. Sin will cause us to deny what God has stated clearly. Many today like to twist the scriptures, take them out of context, or ignore them completely, to carry on their sinful deeds. Do not listen to your flesh, look into the book and allow God to show you the truth of his word.
