“I’ll Take the Old Book”

1 John 2:7 KJV
[7] Brethren, I write no new commandment unto you, but an old commandment which ye had from the beginning. The old commandment is the word which ye have heard from the beginning.

John was not trying to write something new and improved but rather he takes believers back to the word of God. He reminds them of the words of Jesus in John 15:12 where he said, “This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you”. John takes them back to the gospel. He is not trying to give them a watered-down version of the gospel or a gospel with a twist on it. He gives them the old commandment from the beginning. John says the old will still do.
In this modern age of liberalism and false teachers we need to cling to the old book. Preaching and teaching is not about uncovering something new, it’s about explaining and revealing something that is old. This is what makes the word of God so special. We have a God that never changes and so it stands to reason that his word never changes. We must believe the Bible for what it is and for what it says. As it has been said by many, “We do not need to rewrite it, we just need to reread it”.
If you are a Bible reader and a Bible believer, then you understand the importance of staying with the word of God. Nothing new will do. Just give me the old commandments from the book. John says in this verse that it was right in the beginning and it is still relevant now. There is assurance in the consistency of its message. Thank the Lord that we have a Bible that still reads the same. Others can say what they will and do as they please, but I will take the old book!
