1 John 2:25
[25] And this is the promise that he hath promised us, even eternal life.
A promise can be no greater than the one who is making the promise. Some people make promises that they cannot keep. Others make promises that they can keep, but their track record of keeping promises is not very good. Promise keeping is not always an easy task.
Here we have a promise that is out of this world. This promise goes beyond the realm of time. It goes beyond the realm of physical life. It goes beyond the realm of humanity. There is not a man on earth that could make this promise and keep it. This is the greatest promise that has ever been made. I want to explain to you why this is so.
First, it is the greatest promise ever made because of the one who made the promise. Our Creator made us this promise. God the Father has promised every believer eternal life. He is the ultimate promise keeper because the Lord has kept every promise he has ever made.
Another reason is because of the promise itself. God is the giver of life. We have all been blessed to have been given physical life. God is promising us something even greater than physical life. He has promised eternal life.
Finally, this is the greatest promise because of the price it cost to give us such a gift. Salvation may be free, but it’s certainly not cheap. Jesus paid it all on Calvary, so we could have eternal life. It cost the Father his only Son. It cost the Son his life. It costs us nothing. All we must do is receive the gift of life. Oh, what a price! Oh, what a pardon! Oh, what a promise!
