1 John 3:3
[3] And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.
The phrase, “keeping me on my toes”, is one that we are all familiar with. It means the individual is being helped to stay on top of things. They are being held accountable, while being encouraged, to strive for their best performance. We have all experienced this in life. We have all had someone or something “keep us on our toes”.
When we think about the rapture, and the events that are to follow, this phrase comes to mind. John says this hope helps us to purify our lives. In other words, it helps to “keep the believer on his toes”. It causes us to press forward and to examine our lives because the rapture could take place at any moment. The hope of Christ’s return should bring about our best performance in our daily lives. This hope is the fundamental truth of the day that should hold us accountable in our service and in our personal walk with him.
Having said that, why are so many Christians not living in this manner? The answer is simple, they have lost sight of this hope. If we are not careful, we can become so consumed with living down here that we forget he could come at any moment. We have stopped looking for his return. This will cause apathy and complacency to take control of our lives. These are deadly characteristics that will weaken our performance and can even lead to an unholy lifestyle.
We must purify our lives through the word of God and prayer. We must constantly be moving forward or we will backslide. The greatest motivator is the truth that he is coming and it just might be today. This hope should “keep us on our toes” in our Christian life. Allow this hope to purify your walk with him today.
