1 John 4:9
[9] “In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him.”
When I read our verse many precious songs flood my mind. Songs like, “Amazing Love How Can It Be?”, “The Love of God”, or “Isn’t the Love of Jesus Something Wonderful?”. These are all songs that try to describe the divine love given to us. The truth is that the love manifested by God the Father and God the Son will always be a mystery to those who receive it.
The world may question if God truly loves them or not, but our verse teaches that God’s love was manifested to us. His love is seen through his Son. The Father sent His Son to prove how much He loved us. He was also willing to sacrifice his Son to prove how much He loved us. He greatly manifested His love through Christ both in life and in death. There has never been a greater display of true love than what can be seen at Calvary.
Another great truth in our verse is that Jesus is the Father’s only begotten Son. God gave the only Son He had for you and me. I don’t know a parent living who would give one of their children for sinful men, especially if they only had one. All I can say is, oh, what love divine! This is love beyond human comprehension. We should serve Him because we love Him and because He first loved us. The final thought in our verse is what His love produces. We have all stood by the bedside of a loved one and watched them die. We weep and mourn because we love them. Yet no matter how much we love them we cannot make them live a second longer. Our love cannot produce life for those whom we love. But, oh, what love divine, that God’s love for man, through Jesus Christ, produces life for all who trust and believe. This is love divine!
