“Oh, What a Gift!”

1 John 4:13

[13] “Hereby know we that we dwell in him, and he in us, because he hath given us of his Spirit.”

The verse before us holds a triple blessing within it. The first blessing we see, is the fact that we can dwell in him. When you consider who we are, and you consider who he is, then you will realize what a blessing it is to dwell in him. What a blessing that God would open his heart to us, allowing us to love him, worship him and fellowship with him. The word dwell also reveals the permanence of this relationship.

The second blessing is that he dwells within us. God has a desire to fellowship and walk with us. Our relationship is not a one-sided relationship.  The creator of the universe wants to have close communion with us today.

The third blessing in our verse tells us how this is possible. He has given us his Spirit. God knew that we could not get to him by ourselves, and even if somehow we could, we would not be able to maintain a right relationship with him. The scripture tells us that his thoughts and ways are higher than ours. So he gave us the greatest gift a believer could ever possess, and that is his Spirit.  The Spirit of God in the life of the believer is the full assurance of salvation. He is a comforter, a companion, a counselor, and a conscience in our lives. What a gift from heaven. I want to challenge you to be sensitive to his presence today. Take the time to hear his voice, and yield to his leadership in your life. Tune out the noise of this world, and the influences around you, and listen to what he has to say to you. Open your Bible, and allow this heavenly gift to work in your life.
