“The Heartbeat of God”

1 John 4:14

[14] “And we have seen and do testify that the Father sent the Son to be the Saviour of the world.”

What is it that makes the God of the Bible separate from all of the false gods of this world? There are many ways we could answer this question, but I want to answer it by saying, it is because HE IS ALIVE! The God of the Bible is not dead! He is living, breathing and working in the lives of men. The God of Heaven and earth has a heartbeat! Our devotional verse reveals his heartbeat in three distinctive areas.

The first area his heartbeat can be seen is in the souls of men. John says that they have seen and do testify. We know God is alive because his people are alive. The song writer said, “You ask me how I know he lives, he lives within my heart”. If God was dead, his followers would be dead also. The joy of salvation is watching a dead sinner come alive in Christ Jesus.

The second area we can see his heartbeat is in the sacrifice he made by sending his son. God gave his Son for sinful men. All of the other false gods of this world can give nothing. Their religion requires man to give sacrificially for them, while our God sacrificially gave for us. He can only give, because he is alive to give. A dead man can give nothing, because he has no ability to give. He sees, hears and feels nothing. Our creator can see us at all times. He is willing to listen to our prayers, and can be touched by our situations in life. He has a heartbeat.

The final area in our verse that declares his heartbeat is his Son. God gave his Son on the cross of Calvary to be the Saviour of the world. The heartbeat of God is Jesus. The Father loves the Son, yet he loved us enough to give his Son for us. He gave us his heart when he gave us Jesus. The heartbeat of God is that he wants souls to accept his sacrifice, in giving his Son for them.
