1 John 4:18
[18] “There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.”
Fear is an emotion that every individual has to face. No one likes to live in fear, but we all know what it’s like to have to deal with it. Our verse has a lot to say about this subject. I want you to examine with me four fundamental truths about fear.
First notice the truth about fear. The Bible says, “There is no fear in love”. A child who knows his parents love him does not live in fear of his parents. Neither does a wife who knows her husband loves her. She does not live in fear of her husband. There is no fear in love.
The second thing I see is the triumph over fear. Why is there no fear in love? The reason is because love casts it out. Love conquers fear and removes it from the equation. We know that those who love you would never intentionally harm you. We understand that they have your best interest in mind. If this is true with man, how much more with our Heavenly Father.
We also see the torment of fear. Think about how fear can control an individual’s life. Fear can create misery and bring defeat. Fear can bring sadness and sorrow to a life that used to be filled with joy and peace. Fear can cause someone to destroy their life, and even the lives of others.
Last we see the trickery of fear. You see, fear itself has no power. Fear is nothing more than an emotion, and most of the time it is not even a reality. A child of God who lives in fear of their future has chosen to trade love for fear. The more we love God, and walk in his Word, the more we overcome fear. Our love for God grows as we grow, and fear diminishes from our lives. Trade your fears for love, believing that God cares for you. Do not allow the trickery of fear to rob you of the power of love.
