1 John 5:6
[6] “This is he that came by water and blood, even Jesus Christ; not by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit that beareth witness, because the Spirit is truth.”
When Jesus was baptized, the Father spoke out of heaven saying he was well pleased. The Spirit descended from heaven, in the form of a dove, upon Jesus at his baptism, as confirmation of what the Father had spoken. The creator’s stamp of approval was both heard and seen that day. This is what John means when he says he came by water. He testified of the life Jesus had lived from his birth to his baptism.
Our verse also declares that he did not come just by water, but also by blood. The Spirit of God was instrumental at the birth of the Savor, as well as at his baptism. Jesus was born of a virgin womb. He was conceived of the Holy Ghost. This means that the blood flowing through Christ’s veins was not the blood of man, but of God! The Spirit moved on the writers of the New Testament to declare this throughout the Scriptures. We know that his blood is Holy blood, because the Bible tells us this truth.
The Spirit bears witness by water and blood that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. What a blessed assurance! If you have the Spirit living inside of you there is a connection and confirmation with what this verse states. You know it to be true, because the Spirit of truth inside of you confirms it. He will bear witness of Jesus, and not himself. We must follow his leadership and do the same. Every believer has the responsibility to bear witness of the life Jesus lived, which was a sinless life, and the life he laid down, which was a sacrificial life. What a blessing to know that our witness is true. We do not serve a false God, a dead Jesus, or a corrupt Spirit. Our God is true, Jesus is alive, and the Spirit of God is Holy! Take the time to bear witness to someone today.
