1 John 5:8
[8] “And there are three that bear witness in earth, the Spirit, and the water, and the blood: and these three agree in one.”
I want to call to the witness stand of life three earthly witnesses. These witnesses are found in the verse before us. They are the Spirit, the water and the blood. They witnessed in the life of Jesus while he was on this earth, and they witness in the life of every believer as well. The Spirit was at his baptism, and led him into the wilderness. The water proved both the birth and the baptism of Christ. He was testified to be both God and man. The blood of Calvary testifies him to be the lamb of God, which takes away the sin of the world. Just as they agreed in his life, they also testify in agreement to the life of every believer. Let’s notice these three faithful witnesses.
The first witness is the Spirit in you. If you are truly born again, then you have the Spirit living on the inside of you. He can testify that you belong to God, for he lives within your heart. If the Spirit was to take the witness stand of your life today, what would he say on your behalf.
The second witness is the water by you. This has to do with your public baptism. Your profession of faith by water baptism will do two things. First, it pleases the Father, for it is an act of obedience. Second, it identifies you as a true believer. It takes the witness stand to tell the world you are born again.
The third witness is the blood for you. The blood of Jesus on the mercy seat in heaven testifies of our redemption on earth. If the blood has been applied, then you have the blessed assurance of heaven. If the blood has not been applied, then there is no title, deed or trophy on earth that will get you inside heaven’s gate. The blood testifies that we have been born again. While baptism cannot save, it does testify that by our own will we have trusted Christ. The Spirit testifies of salvation that is real in knowing Jesus! How about you today?
