1 John 5:9
[9] “If we receive the witness of men, the witness of God is greater: for this is the witness of God which he hath testified of his Son.”
Why is it so easy for us to believe man and so difficult for us to believe God? Do you ever find yourself in this condition? We have so much faith in some people that we hardly ever second guess what they say. People will often say about others who they have confidence in, “If he tells you something, you can believe it”. They might even say something like, “Well I know if she says it, then it’s the truth”. They say it with such faith and assurance, as if there can be no doubt. They base it all on the character of the person, and the confidence they have in the individual they are speaking about.
Sometimes, they have this confidence because of how well they know an individual. Maybe they are speaking about a parent, a spouse or a lifelong friend. Someone they have spent most of their life around, and know their behavior and testimony on a more intimate level. This produces such faith in the witness of the individual. They believe them so much, that you and I would be wasting our time trying to convince them otherwise.
Every man has proven untrue at some point, and every man has been wrong on many occasions during his life. No individual possesses full knowledge, or ability, at all times. The potential of a false witness is a possibility with every man. We are all capable of errors, and we have all made our share of them.
However, the witness of God is greater! What God declares can only be true. The Word of God is without error, and can never be wrong. We should receive the witness of God over the witness of men. The Bible is our source of strength and stability. I’m thankful for the witness of faithful men, but I’m glad I have a greater witness. A witness that cannot fail. The witness of God, which is far greater. Lord help me to never doubt you, and to fully trust in your Word. If God says it, then that settles it!
