“For The Record”

1 John 5:11

[11] “And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.”

This verse is another one of my favorite verses in this epistle. There are several reasons why I love this verse, and I want to share them with you in our devotional for today. I believe you will agree with me, and I trust they will help you, as much as they have helped me.

The first reason is because of the start of this verse. It begins with John declaring that there is a record. This means that you and I have something we can depend upon, because it has been written down. It has been recorded. When something is recorded, it stands as evidence of what has been said, or done.

The second reason is because of the subject of this verse. The subject is eternal life. God has made a record concerning eternal life. I’m so thankful that eternal life is not based upon what man has said, or written down. Eternal life is based upon what God has said, and written down.

The third reason is because of the Son in this verse. The Son is the source of eternal life. Eternal life is in Jesus Christ, and him alone. If you have trusted Jesus Christ as your Savior, then you have eternal life. Your name has been recorded in heaven. God has a record of your birth.

The fourth reason is because of the sharing of this verse. This verse teaches us that God hath given us eternal life. He has given us what we do not deserve. He has given us eternal life through his Son, Jesus. This verse teaches us very simply, the truth of eternal salvation in Christ. The good news is that we can share it with others, and tell them God has promised, that if they will believe, and accept it, they too can have eternal life. What joy to know that your salvation is recorded, and promised, by the one who keeps the record!
