1 John 5:20
[20] “And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life.”
Our verse contains two great finds, and two great facts. First, we that are saved have found the Son of God, and through him we have found spiritual understanding. These are riches that money cannot buy! To be saved, and have understanding removes all fear, and gives us hope in this world, and the world to come. We understand that we know Christ, and that we are in him. The songwriter said, “I am his, and he is mine forever”.
Secondly, there are two great facts. The first has to do with the reality of the Son, and the second has to do with the reality of God. John brings them both together in his final words to remind us that Jesus is the Son of God, and that Jesus is God. As we have already stated before, you cannot dissect the trinity. You cannot believe in God, the Father, and reject God, the Son. They are coequal, and they are coexistent.
Salvation through the Son of God gives us an understanding of the deity of Christ. Just because we may not be able to comprehend it all, or explain it all, does not mean that we do not believe it all. You might say, “Well preacher, how can you believe in something that you cannot fully comprehend, or fully explain?” I can answer that question with one word. It is the word “faith”. Faith gives the child of God both confidence and understanding beyond this world’s theology.
Will you place your faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, as the Son of God? Will you believe that Jesus is the only begotten Son of God? Will you believe Jesus is God? My answer is “yes” to all of these questions. My friend, how about you?
