“Nothing New To Say”

2 John 5 KJV

[5] “And now I beseech thee, lady, not as though I wrote a new commandment unto thee, but that which we had from the beginning, that we love one another.”

John reminds this dear lady that his letter contains nothing new, but is a reminder of what she has heard from the beginning. What makes the Bible so unique is that it is an old message that is up to date for any generation, any time, and anywhere. The message is relevant, clear, and steady. The commandments of this book never change.

John reminds her of the commandment our Savior gave, to “love one another.” Love is the passion, and the principle, for the Christian life. When John speaks about love, he is speaking about Christ’s love. A love that knows no boundaries, or limitations. This is an amazing love that prevails over all sin, and conquers all of the evils that can poison a man’s heart.

The love of Christ is to be exhibited in the life of every believer, and is to be the tie that binds all of his children together. His love is the common denominator in all of our lives. Each of us can look around and testify that, if we had not known the love of God, we most likely would not have known each other. His love has connected us as believers. One day we will experience this love at its fullest. We will see Jesus face to face, and be standing in the love of our Father, in a glorified body and in an environment with no hatred, envy, or strife, and all is perfect and complete. We will have full knowledge and understanding, and will be able to enjoy the glories of heaven, and the love of God as never before. It is at that moment that we will love one another in perfect union and harmony. Until then, we are to endeavor to love one another as the Bible commands.
