2 John 6 KJV
[6] “And this is love, that we walk after his commandments. This is the commandment, That, as ye have heard from the beginning, ye should walk in it.”
I am sure that if you walked up to the average church member today, and asked them this question, “Do you love God?”, they would quickly respond by saying “yes”. They might even look at you with astonishment, that you would dare question their love for God. The fact that they attend church, and call themselves a Christian, should be evidence enough that they love him. But the truth is, going to church, and saying you love God, is not enough evidence to others, or to God himself, that you truly love him.
Our verse says that love is seen by walking in his commandments. Jesus said in John 14:15, “If ye love me, keep my commandments.” Obedience declares our devotion and commitment to God. It expresses to those we come in contact with that we love him. Do not misunderstand what I am saying, I believe we should testify that we love him. However, there are those who say they love him, but do not walk in his commandments. This kind of lifestyle places a big question mark on what they declare. If you love him, then why do you not obey him? On the other hand, there are those who may not shout it as loud as others do with their lips, but you can look at their lives, and there is no doubt that they deeply love God.
People have become accustomed to attending church on Sunday, and singing “Oh how I love Jesus”, then leaving and going about their life, doing their own thing, and not living by the commandments of God. It is quite simple, a faithful spouse declares with their life that they love their companion. An unfaithful spouse may say it all day long, but their actions speak louder than their words. Look at your life, and ask yourself, “Do I love God?”
