3 John 5 KJV
[5] “Beloved, thou doest faithfully whatsoever thou doest to the brethren, and to strangers;”
John is still praising Gaius in our verse, but he turns his attention from his faithfulness in the book, to his faithfulness to the brethren. This servant had proven to be a faithful help and blessing to the men of God who would pass by. He knew some of these preachers on a personal level, such as the apostle John. Other preachers passing by were strangers to him, but he offered to them the same faithful spirit and service. They discovered two open doors awaiting their arrival when meeting Gaius.
The first, was the open door of his heart. Gaius was sincere in his service. He loved the Lord, and loved those who labored for him. He desired nothing in return, but wanted to be a blessing to men of God on their journey. Whenever people love the Lord, they look for opportunities to be a blessing. Because their heart is open to the Savior, it is also open to service. Whenever someone’s heart is not right, it is very difficult to get them to be faithful in service. Gaius opened the door of his heart. Second, he opened the door of his home. He was willing to inconvenience his own life, and schedule, for the benefit of others. What might appear to be a great sacrifice was really a great blessing. It was no drudgery because his heart was right. He opened his home and used his resources, because he had a desire to serve those who were serving others. You might be surprised what you could do for God if you would open your heart more to the work of God. You might be surprised how much you could do. I wonder, had he not opened his heart, would he have ever seen the opportunity he had within his home to be a blessing. Remember, we do not need lots of wealth and resources to be a blessing. All we need to do is open the door of our heart, and then God will show us what other doors we have to open.
