“Make Up Your Mind”

James 1:8

[8] “A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.”

The word for “double minded” literally means “doubled soul”. It describes a man who is divided in his loyalty. In fact, the Hebrew idiom is literally, “a heart and a heart”. This is an individual who cannot make up his mind about where he stands, or what he believes. He struggles in his prayer life, therefore he has issues in every other aspect of life. He is a man who is unstable in all of his ways.

The word “unstable” means “to be restless”. If an individual cannot be settled in prayer, then he will struggle in all other areas of life. Someone once said, “that all failures are prayer failures”. It is important that we seek wisdom from God daily. We must live in God’s Word, and seek his will, in order to have a single mind.

So many people today are up and down. Society wants us to be open minded. They want us to accept all people for who they are, and what they stand for. The Bible says the opposite. Friend, you must make up your mind which side of the aisle you are going to be on. Do not compromise or give in to this ever-changing world.

Think about a man standing in an airport who is double minded about whether or not he wants to get on the plane. He has purchased his ticket, and has made it through security. His flight has been called, and folks are boarding. If he stands there long enough, and does nothing, guess what happens? The gate will close, and the plane will push off from the terminal. He will have missed his flight. Even though he could not decide, the decision was made for him. If we do not seek God’s council, we will not be ready when it comes time to make decisions in life. Friend, if you are not ready, then life will make those decisions for you. We must make up our minds. How? By daily asking God for wisdom.
