James 2:1 KJV
“My brethren, have not the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory, with respect of persons.”
To be like Jesus means we must treat others the way Jesus treated them. He did not elevate personalities, He did not play politics, and He did not show favoritism to those who were rich or prestigious in society. He loved every man and was willing to help all those who put their faith in Him. He did not involve Himself in cliques and picks. He made Himself of no reputation and quashed those who were demonstrating “respect of persons”.
According to James, this has always been an issue in the church. We see this today, as well. Certain members try to climb their way to the so-called “top of the pyramid” in the church. They politic among the membership building favor and approval hoping to gain a place of position or recognition. They form an alliance or a bond that is unhealthy within the church. It can quickly turn into a high school drama team that parades around the church making other members feel less desirable or unpopular. Those who are drawn in are only being used to help the “ring leader” (or leaders) gain what they want. In the end, those same members are left disappointed and deserted by what they thought was a lasting brotherhood or sisterhood that would never end.
How do you keep this from happening to you or your church? First, always prefer your brother before yourself. Second, never build a bond so tight with anyone in the church that goes beyond your loyalty to your Savior and the leadership in the church. Third, don’t be swept away by personality. Fourth, determine not to be intimidated or be a supporter of those who try to develop a following. Fifth, remember Christ is the only One worthy to be at the top of the pyramid. Sixth, be sure that if you do make it to the top, you will eventually have a hard fall!
