James 2:23 KJV
[23] “And the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God.”
The Lord has a lot of children, but He has only a few friends, and Abraham was one of those friends. Exodus 33:11 tells us that Moses was one of His friends. Our verse today takes us back to the covenant that God made with Abraham. He promised that from his seed would come a great nation. Abraham believed God’s promise, and it was counted to him for righteousness.
The Lord is a friend that we can trust. Proverbs tells us He will stick closer than a brother. We can go to Him with all of the problems of life, and He is always ready and willing to help us. I like the old song that says, “I’ll be a friend to Jesus”. Our Savior called us His friend in John 15:13 when he spoke about his death on the cross. We never have to worry about God the Father or God the Son being an unfaithful friend. God is a true friend who loves us at all times.
How can we be the friend of God? We become His friend by getting to know Him more. That means spending time with God regularly. Have a set time to talk to your friend and listen to Him. We can be His friend by sharing our hearts with Him. Tell Him about your struggles and issues in life. Share with Him your burdens and cares as you would a close friend. We become His friend when we rely on His Word as our guide, knowing that He will not fail us or lead us astray. A true friend wants to feel loved, trusted, and appreciated. A true friend wants to feel that you want to be with them because they desire to be with you.
It amazes me that the God of glory would even want to be our friend! Why would He desire our friendship or fellowship? There is only one answer to this question; He loves us! God loves us! Jesus Christ loves us!
