James 3:8 KJV
[8] “But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.”
Why is the tongue so evil? Why can it not be tamed? The answer to these questions is simple. The tongue is full of deadly poison. An evil tongue will not just make one sick, but it will destroy the life of an individual. It defiles the man from the inside out. The tongue fertilizes the wicked soil of his soul. The sin of pride, or perversion, that may be lurking in his heart and mind is soon announced by the tongue. The tongue fuels the inward sins by its outward proclamations.
The evil tongue not only poisons the man’s soul but also his spirit. I understand that all these sins begin in the mind and heart first. However, I want you to see how the boldness of the tongue feeds the ego and strengthens the sins that are within. It is a deadly poison that not only defiles the individual but also defiles others who drink it.
Think about the deadly poison of a false teacher as he stands before a congregation of people. No doubt, good people are sitting there listening and searching for the truth. Sadly, they drink the deadly poison of false doctrine. The unruly evil of the tongue has spread the deadly poison of false doctrine and has corrupted the souls of those who drank it.
While we can use our tongues to glorify and praise God, we must remember the tongue is not redeemed. The tongue within itself is anti-God. One day we will receive a new body, and with that new body, we will have a tongue that will never speak another evil word! The poison will all be gone! It will be a glad day when we never have to worry about saying another evil thing. Our tongue will only speak of the glad tidings of our Savior and His glorious cause. The evil tongue will forever be taken away!
