“A Double Tongue”

James 3:9 KJV

[9] “Therewith bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men, which are made after the similitude of God.”

I remember as a boy, a religious man who lived on our street. I call him religious because I don’t know if he was ever truly saved. I’m not saying the man wasn’t saved, but I remember questioning his faith in God. I know this sounds judgmental, but the things he said and did were very confusing to me.

I would see him go to church, come home, and even testify about how the Lord had been good to him and his family. I would later hear him curse with my dad and his brothers. He would say things that were not becoming of a Christian. On Sundays, he would speak the language of saints, and throughout the week, he would speak the language of sinners. He would make critical statements about his church and his preacher. It was confusing how a man could bless God one day out of the week and curse man the rest of the week. This man had a double tongue.

Friend, a double tongue is destructive and should not be the testimony of a child of God. How often do we hear people sing “Oh, How I Love Jesus” on Sunday but talk like the world through the rest of the week? A double tongue is the sign of a double-minded man. Let us practice consistency in our speech.

Determine to use your tongue as a tool to minister grace unto those around you. Conversation should be an opportunity to bless the Lord, build up others in the faith, and witness to those who need to hear the good news of salvation. We should never dishonor God or confuse man by having a double tongue.
