“The Way Up is Down”

James 4:10 KJV

[10] “Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.”

We cannot say enough about the subject of humility. It is something that we all must be mindful of daily. God expects us to practice humility in every aspect of life. He wants us to be careful that we don’t think highly of ourselves. That is a great temptation in the world we live in today because it is so easy to build a platform for yourself. Many get caught up in self-promotion, and it is acceptable in society. There will always be someone that will agree with you or stroke your ego.

The world doesn’t care about a humble man, but the Lord is interested in him. The Lord will elevate the individual that will give Him the glory. As Christians, we must always glorify God for anything and everything we accomplish. Through the years as a pastor, I have observed that the more a person praises the Lord, the more God promotes him. An example of this in the Old Testament would be Joseph. No matter the cost, Joseph honored God, and God honored him.

Jesus is the best example of humility in the New Testament. The Bible teaches that He made Himself of no reputation, but He came as a lowly carpenter’s son and lived as a humble servant of God. Philippians chapter two teaches that God exalted Him for His humility. Christ left this example, “with God; the way up is down.” Stay humble before God, and He will promote you at the right time and the right way.

Remember, He knows if our humility is true or false. False humility will make a fool out of you and will never fool God. Others may see through your false humility as well. Dear reader, purpose in your heart to keep the correct estimation of yourself and allow the Lord to use you how He sees fit. Be satisfied to be insignificant, last, or unrecognized by others. Please Him by staying humble.
