“Facing the Devil”

Jude 9 KJV

[9] “Yet Michael the archangel, when contending with the devil he disputed about the body of Moses, durst not bring against him a railing accusation, but said, The Lord rebuke thee.”

Our verse reminds us of the rank, the responsibility, and the restraint of Michael, the archangel, when dealing with the Devil. Even though Michael is the chief angel with great power and ability, he leaves the judgment of Satan up to the Lord and not himself. It is unknown how often any of us actually face the Devil. We undoubtedly battle our flesh and the world more than him personally, but there are some things we should remember when we do encounter him.

First, we must realize that we are no match for him. The Charismatic Movement teaches that we should command Satan and that we have power in the name of Jesus. I certainly believe that we have power in the name of Jesus, but that does not mean we have the right or the authority to start commanding the Devil. When fighting him, we are to seek God’s help and use the Sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God. It will be what God has said that will defeat him and not what we have said. We must remember that we are no match for him because we are just flesh. Michael left the battle to the Lord, which is what we should do.

Another thing to remember when facing the Devil is that we should not give him any glory. We should never brag about him or credit him for the hard times he has given us. He wants us to sing his praise for troubling our lives, but we should magnify God in our troubled times. That is what will defeat the Devil and strengthen our faith. When, and if, we face Satan, may we be like Michael by walking lightly and leaving the real battle up to God.
