1 Peter 2:13 KJV
[13] “Submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord’s sake: whether it be to the king, as supreme;”
We will never agree with all of the laws of the land, but we are to submit to them regardless of the ruler. Rome was ruled by evil people when Peter wrote this verse. It was not the will of God for the church to lead an insurrection but to shine the light of the gospel. Persecution of the church would cause the light of the gospel to shine even brighter.
Everything we do in life should always be for the glory of the Lord and the good of His kingdom! Peter points out that Christians in society are representatives of Jesus Christ. We have a responsibility to reveal God’s virtues. The world should see godly character and conduct in our lives regarding the government and those in authority.
The word translated as “ordinance” means “creation or institution,” so it does not mean individual laws but the institutions that make and enforce them. It is possible to submit to the institutions and still disobey the law.
When we consider the shape that America is in today and the corruption that is in Washington, our first reaction is to reject everything that they say. It is embarrassing what the office of our Commander in Chief has become today. There was a time when the world respected our president and country. Now, the world scoffs and mocks our president and no longer fears America.
We must remember that no matter how corrupt or wicked our president may be, we must obey the Word of God and live submitted lives. We pray for those who are in authority and pray for our nation. Why should we submit to such a corrupt president and wicked government? Our verse says we should do it for the Lord’s sake.
We must remember that God is still in control, and He will have the final say. We must pray that our president will turn to God and be saved. We must pray that he will see the importance of leading our nation back to God. We must never give up or stop praying for those in authority. Pray that God will turn the hearts of politicians to abolish the wicked laws they have passed. There is still power in prayer, and God is still on the throne.
