1 Peter 2:21 KJV
[21] “For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps:”
Peter reminds us that we should submit to those over us because we are saints who are to be like Jesus. Jesus Christ is the supreme example of both submission and suffering. Peter learned from his own experience that the people of God serve through suffering. He also learned to lead by suffering, which eventually leads to glory.
Think about how the Lord used these lessons in the life of Peter. He was in opposition to Jesus going to the cross and suffering. He was willing to fight for Jesus, go to prison, and even face death if necessary. Peter soon realized that these bold statements would not make it to sunrise. He failed Jesus repeatedly by denying Him. The worst thing that happened to Peter was also the best thing that could have happened to him. He needed to learn that Christianity involved suffering, but out of suffering would come great rewards.
Jesus would teach His disciples how to suffer. They would see Christ suffer as no man had ever suffered before. They would watch Him endure the cruelty of the cross. They would see Him pray for those who harmed Him and rescue one of the thieves who mocked Him on the cross. They would hear Him cry the words, “It is finished.” Christ Jesus was the perfect example of how an innocent person suffers. After His death, one of the soldiers even declared that He was the Son of God.
The disciples would follow in the footsteps of the Savior. Peter would eventually go to prison and suffer death for Jesus. However, he would be a different man after Pentecost and would understand the purpose of suffering. Calvary had forever changed Peter, and Calvary will forever change all of His disciples. We must linger at Calvary and view the suffering of our Savior.
Dear reader, we may have to suffer in this life. We do not know what the future holds for any of us. We must study our example and be willing to be faithful no matter the cost. You might say that you cannot bear the thought of suffering as a Christian. Remember that if that time comes, God will give us the same grace He has given others before us. We must continually keep our eyes on the one who is our example.
