“A Ready Answer”

1 Peter 3:15 KJV

[15] “but sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear:”

This verse calls for every Christian to prepare to proclaim! The ability to give the correct answer the moment we receive a question comes from having prepared hearts and minds at all times. It is not a one-time preparation but a continual practice in our lives. We never know when the world will require an answer from us or when we will be required to testify for the cause of Christ.

I’m saddened by how many Christians today are unprepared to answer when called on. Many do not know enough scriptures to teach their children the right way or answer the questions they might have. They often bring their children to the preacher for counseling because they have not prepared themselves in the Word of God. As Christians, our responsibility is to know our Bible, to be firm in our doctrines and convictions, and to have our hearts right with God so we can boldly proclaim the truth when needed.

Peter reminds us that we must be ready to answer with meekness and fear. The world sees meekness as a weakness, but that is not how the Bible defines this word. In this text, meekness means to be without arrogance. Our answer to the world must be swift but not arrogant. There should be no hesitation when asked about our beliefs and convictions. We must quickly reply but in a kind way. We can be bold without being arrogant. A bold answer can turn a heart toward God, while arrogance is a character trait marked with pride. God does not want us to be prideful, but he wants us to be ready and humble. The word fear in our verse has to do with reverence. In other words, our answer is to be prepared, firm, and respectful when called upon by this world. When we read of Christians martyred for their faith, we see them in their finest hour. They all bore the same grace as they faced death. They did not back down or face the end with sadness or regret. Those heroes of the faith left this world with a ready answer and a peace that passes all understanding. We must use our freedom and liberty to witness at all times and be bold in our profession of faith.
