1 Peter 4:1 KJV
[1] “Forasmuch then as Christ hath suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves likewise with the same mind: for he that hath suffered in the flesh hath ceased from sin;”
Peter uses the word “hoplizomai” for the phrase “arm yourselves.” This is the only place this word is used in the Scriptures. It describes a Greek soldier preparing for a battle by putting on his armor. If anyone understood the importance of being prepared for spiritual warfare, it was this apostle. He had experienced both victory and defeat in the service of God.
Peter reminds us that the One sitting at the right hand of God also lived on this earth. Our Savior understands the warfare that we face from day to day. He knows how intense the battle can be, and He is our example of how we can defeat the Devil through the power of the Spirit. To live in victory, we must follow His example in the Scriptures.
I am thankful that we have a Commander and Chief who has fought the battle and won the victory for us. If we live with the mind of Christ, then we can live in victory just as He did when He was on this earth. We must not ignore the admonishment that we are given in this verse. Peter walked with Jesus and had a heart to serve Him, but he found himself overtaken by the flesh during a critical time because he was unprepared.
I think this happens to many of God’s children. We are often like Peter in our daily walk. Speaking, more than listening, and confident that we will stand in that critical hour. Sometimes, we are surprised by the weakness of the flesh. The enemy waits until we have not suited up for the battle. He watches to see when we have let our guard down. He is always looking for that weak spot in our armor.
Child of God, watch and pray each day. Put on the whole armor of God as Paul admonished us to. Do not become overconfident in the flesh, for it will surely fail you. Always keep your guard up and walk circumspectly in your daily life. Whenever you hear that still small voice speak to you, be sure to obey it. Do not ignore the slightest nudge of the Spirit working in your life. It could bring great defeat in your life if you do. Remember, we arm ourselves daily with prayer and reading the Word of God. Have you put on your armor today?
