James 4:4 KJV
[4] “Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.”
The Devil is the number one enemy of God. The world is the number two enemy of God. Believers should feel the same way about making friends with the world as they would making friends with the Devil. It’s strange how many believers today will take a firm stand against Satan while flirting with the world.
God calls this friendship spiritual adultery. We belong to Christ, and He is our Bridegroom. We are to be faithful to Him and not give ourselves to this world. That means we are to reject the world’s philosophies, mentality, fashion, and the world’s system. Being friends with this world will separate us from friendship with God.
Consider this thought, no parent in their right mind would be friends with a daughter-in-law or son-in-law that was openly cheating on their flesh and blood. They would separate themselves from the adulterer until things were made right. The Father will not be in fellowship with someone who will openly cheat on His Son. Spiritual adultery is just as serious as physical adultery in the eyes of God. There must be a deep devotion to our Savior to have a right relationship with the Father.
Finally, the verse ends with a solemn statement. God makes it very clear that if you are on the world’s side, it is the side of the enemy. Dear reader, examine your life to see if you are cheating on God. Have you developed such a friendship with this world that it has separated you from fellowship with the Father? Be sure that you are not on the side of the enemy, but you are on God’s side!
